J-Schooler’s Story on Todd Akin’s Comments Blows up the Internet

By now, you’ve probably heard of Todd Akin’s latest brilliant comment (and we don’t mean this comment or this comment).

In Springfield this past weekend, Akin compared incumbent Claire McCaskill to a dog who plays fetch for expansive government.

Had this been any other candidate, the story might have been overlooked, but because he’s, well, Todd Akin, the story was published by PoliticMo.com immediately.

From there, the story was picked up by what seemed to be every single news outlet with a politics section–The New York TimesThe Washington Post, Jezebel and even New York Magazine, to name a few. Continue reading

The Internet Reacts to Mizzou J-School Grads’ Starting Salaries

We published a story Monday that got some attention in the journalistic navel-gazing blogosphere (god love ‘em) about the results of the latest destination study at MU. We found that, compared to other academic schools at the University of Missouri, Missouri School of Journalism graduates make the lowest average annual salary and have the third lowest placement rate.

Our story got picked up by Jim Romenesko, Poynter, the Riverfront Times and a couple others, and people rushed to Twitter with their reactions to the post (because, duh, we’re journalists).

Mystery Solved: Our Biochem Major is Actually a Fellow Product of the “Douchefactory” – by Ali & Cody

Thanks to a comment he left on our website, we now know Mizzou junior Ryan Cornell was behind the Campus Basement post calling the Missouri School of Journalism a “Douchefactory.”

We hope Cornell truly realizes the sleazy and unnecessary drama that he caused when he decided to call the entire J-School population a slummy fat-fest and named JSB a “fucking joke.” This coming from the guy who writes for a site called Campus Basement, no offense. Continue reading

Memeing Up The Missourian

JSB-TheOnlyAnswerMemeAlicia Stice and several of her Columbia Missourian colleagues are on a roll with very relatable “first world problem” memes. With their latest meme, they are shining light on particular events that reporters feel obligated to complain about in a humorous, yet charming way.

Not only are they very endearing, but rumor has it that J-Schooler’s are very intrigued and even addicted to these amusing little memes.

Here are just a couple student journalism memes we plucked off Alicia’s website:

Missouri School of Journalism: Prestigious J-School, or “Douchefactory”?

You know the best way to piss off the entire Missouri School of Journalism? Write a post for a gossip website that basically says Mizzou’s J-School has more douchebags than a sale at Walgreens.

And boy, did Campus Basement really step in it when it published “20 Reasons Why the J-School is a Douchefactory,” by a semi-literate Biochemistry major at the University of Missouri. For the second time in just days, Campus Basement has been forced to remove an offensive post from its website because of the public’s overwhelmingly negative response.

Good news for you, though: We have the original post in its entirety, republished below!

J-School Buzz Got a Shout Out on Romenesko!

Much to our surprise, excitement, and girlish screams, J-School Buzz got a mention on Romenesko, a blog that provides news and commentary about journalism and the media. The blog post mentions the new “Stereotype” series that we are introducing today about sequences in the Missouri School of Journalism.
