J-Schooler’s Story on Todd Akin’s Comments Blows up the Internet

By now, you’ve probably heard of Todd Akin’s latest brilliant comment (and we don’t mean this comment or this comment).

In Springfield this past weekend, Akin compared incumbent Claire McCaskill to a dog who plays fetch for expansive government.

Had this been any other candidate, the story might have been overlooked, but because he’s, well, Todd Akin, the story was published by PoliticMo.com immediately.

From there, the story was picked up by what seemed to be every single news outlet with a politics section–The New York TimesThe Washington Post, Jezebel and even New York Magazine, to name a few. Continue reading

The Internet Reacts to Mizzou J-School Grads’ Starting Salaries

We published a story Monday that got some attention in the journalistic navel-gazing blogosphere (god love ‘em) about the results of the latest destination study at MU. We found that, compared to other academic schools at the University of Missouri, Missouri School of Journalism graduates make the lowest average annual salary and have the third lowest placement rate.

Our story got picked up by Jim Romenesko, Poynter, the Riverfront Times and a couple others, and people rushed to Twitter with their reactions to the post (because, duh, we’re journalists).

Journalists are Poor and the Sky is Blue, but We’re Getting Better!

MU recently released their latest destination study, and we have some bad news mixed with some semi-good news for Missouri School of Journalism students.

The bad news: the J-School average starting salary of post-graduates is the lowest of any school at MU. The average full-time annual salary for a graduate of the Missouri School of Journalism is $31, 800–the standard of living is barely below that number. And these figures seem pretty low once you consider the amount of money J-Schoolers spend on tuition and equipment. Continue reading

The Columbia Missourian Charges Journalism Students for Online Access to Their Own Work

Advanced reporting and news design students working at the Columbia Missourian are required to purchase an online membership to the Missourian as part of the curriculum, according to a tipster who asked to remain anonymous.

On top of paying tuition (and journalism course fees) and giving the Missourian free labor, these journalism students also have to pay for access to the stories they slave over. Does anyone else feel like they are being nickel and dimed here? Oh, and let’s not forget that lovely MacBook “requirement.” The list goes on and on of expensive things you “need” for the J-School.

RJI Betrays Committed Relationship with Apple, Set to Partner with Microsoft

Move over, Kristen Stewart, there’s a new illicit affair in the works. We received an anonymous tip about the big partnership the Reynolds Journalism Institute plans to announce later today. It turns out that the white room on the ground floor of Walter Williams Hall will now be the new home of a testing center for, wait for it, Microsoft/Windows products.

I’ll let that sink in for a moment.
