Should We Change The J-School Buzz Logo?

J-School Buzz got a fun email in our inbox this week. Graduate student and Vox Magazine Creative Director Erica Mendez sent us a possible new logo for the website, and it’s really good!
We can’t decide whether to keep the old one or go into the strange future with a new logo, so we’re going to let you decide.
We’ve set up a poll that will expire in one week. You each get one vote, but we’re not going by the honor code because that would imply you are honorable people (JK, sorta). Rather, our poll

will allow only one vote per IP address to make sure everyone’s vote is counted equally.
Those are your two choices. Which should we use as our logo going forward?
Vote in the poll below and send the link to your friends and ask them to vote. You have one week until we announce the winner next Wednesday. GO!
UPDATE: Our poll has closed. Thank you for voting!

For sure. The clip art has to go. And, as a general rule of thumb, if the great Erica Mendez offers her talents, you take her up on it. Props for letting the crowd vote! Will you for sure go with what they pick?
It was too hard a decision to make on our own, so we need the public input. We will go with whichever design wins, even if it is by one vote. We wanted to get people involved with major JSB decisions, and rack up some page views while we were at it
This was all kinds of wins for us.
Sorry, I disagree with the new logo.
While amateurish, the original mark had a certain kitschy levity that I appreciated. It gave the sense that this was a student operation that was flying a little under the radar, meaning that I didn’t know what they were going to say next.
The new mark, however, looks like a rural high school mascot.
It’s not the new logo. Our website visitors have a week to vote on which one should be our logo going forward. If you feel that strongly, ask your friends to vote for the old one, because the alternative one is winning in the vote.
I’m sorry you feel that way, Mr. Triplett. I always welcome design criticism when it’s constructive and can help me to be better. And as a graphic designer, it would have been nice if you had done so.
I had submitted this logo to the founders as a fan of their hard work and to help in a way I knew how. In no way did I want to hinder their operation by sending them something resembling a “rural high school mascot” though, I’m not sure what’s so wrong with that.
Regardless of the result, I wish the best to J-School Buzz and I hope that the vote does bring a lot of new people to the site!
Don’t worry Erica, we love your design, and so do 80 percent of the people who have voted so far! The benefit of contributing to an online publication like J-School Buzz is that you learn how to filter out the pointless criticism, and focus on the constructive criticism that will help you become a better designer, writer and/or editor. We’d love for you to contribute in any capacity on a regular basis!
